Afghanistan offers a unique blend of historical and natural attractions, such as the ancient city of Herat and the stunning landscapes of the Hindu Kush. Despite its challenges, it holds untapped potential in tourism, making it an intriguing destination for some of Turkmenistan's 6 million residents.
Afghanistan is considered significantly less safe for tourists compared to Turkmenistan. According to the Global Peace Index, Afghanistan ranks 157th out of 160 countries, while Turkmenistan is ranked 80th. The murder rates are relatively similar, with Turkmenistan at 4.2 per 100,000 people and Afghanistan at 4.0. However, Afghanistan faces higher levels of organized crime, with indices indicating severe issues in areas such as mafia presence (7.5 for Afghanistan vs. 3.0 for Turkmenistan) and crime networks (8.5 vs. 3.5). Overall, the security situation in Afghanistan poses significant risks for tourists, making it advisable to exercise caution and consider alternative destinations.
